Individual Note (shared)
The name of Edward Penfold appears on several occasions in the Vestry Book of the Ifield Parish Church from about 1845 through to his death in 1872.
There is an Edward Penfold who was, in the 1840's, in the 1840's excluded from paying the local rate on the grounds of poverty and later entries include the following:
29 January 1845 - "Notice was also given for the same meeting 'to take into consideration the making some arrangement with the Lord of the Manor respecting a cottage on his wasteland now in the occupation of Edward Penfold' but nothing was done in the business so few persons being present."
30 March 1848 - ".....the Collector appointed by the Surveyors of the Highway be ordered to make out the Rate Books for the Overseer of the Poor and the Churchwardens and to collect the Rates if required."
2 November 1848 - "It was resolved unanimously.......first that the Rate Book of the last Poors' Rate be read aloud by Edward Penfold the assistant Collector of rates....."
26 March 1849 - "Master Edward Penfold was unanimously selected Collector of rates as at 30 March, 1848."
25 March 1851 - *Referred to as 'Edward Penfold - Schoolmaster'. "Master Edward Penfold was unanimously selected Collector of Rates as at the Vestry of 30 March 1848."
30 March 1851 - Enumerator for Ifield in the National Census.
2 October 1851 - Listed as Overseer.
25 March 1852 - "Appointed as Overseer and Collector of Rates...unanimously selected....at the same salary as last year..."
Thursday, 7 October, 1852 - "....It was also the unanimous opinion of the Vestry.....they hearby authorise Edward Penfold, Clerk...."
1855 - Listed as Parish Clerk.
25 March, 1862 - "Mr. Edward Penfold was unanimously re-elected Collector of Rates at a salary of 18 shillings per week during the will of the Vestry."
1862 - Listed in Kelly's Directory as Assistant Overseer.
1866 - Listed in the Vestry Book as Assistant Overseer.
24 March, 1868 - "Mr. Edward Penfold's the Assistant Overseer's resignation after a service of twenty years was received and accepted, entirely owing from affliction and this meeting desires to record the excellent manner in which he has filled the office being to the satisfaction of the parish generally...."
29 June 1872 - Burial of Edward Penfold at Ifield, having died at age of 72.
It is interesting that in the early records he is referred to as 'Master' but as time passed and he obviously became a respected member of the community he is referred to as 'Mr.'
*It appears from this and the references to him as 'Sunday School Master' on the baptismal records of some of his children that he became the master of the Sunday School which was established in Ifield village in 1843. The foundation stone can still be seen in the wall of the old school buildings near St. Mary's Church.

All the above notes have been collected and collated by Joan Whyte - descendent of John Penfold - brother to Esther and Phillis, son of Edward.
