First Generation

1. Frederick Cuthbert PENFOLD 1 [3635], son of Frank William PENFOLD (1859-1936) [3614] and Rose FROW (1862-1919) [3633], was born on 11 January 1890 in Christchurch. NZ. He married Lucie Rosina Hartelow BRUNT [3661] on 23 December 1912 in Christchurch, NZ. Between 1920 and 1960 he was in Engineer. He died on 5 January 1964 in Christchurch.

 

After minimal formal education became a very successful engineer. He established his own business in 1927 (F C Penfold & Co) and developed particular expertise in precision engineering and brassfounding.

He sold the business in the 1960's. He was prominent in local body affairs being a member of the Christchurch City Council and chairman of the Christchurch Transport Board. He was also prominent in the Manufacturers Association both regional and national.

 

Lucie Rosina Hartelow BRUNT 1 [3661] was born on 18 March 1892 in Christchurch. She died on 10 December 1984 in Christchurch. She and Frederick Cuthbert PENFOLD had the following children:

Second Generation

2. Colin Frederick PENFOLD 1 [3662], son of Frederick Cuthbert PENFOLD [3635] and Lucie Rosina Hartelow BRUNT [3661], was born on 9 November 1917 in Christchurch. NZ. He died on 23 April 1944 in Holland. He was buried in Eindhoven military cemetery.

 

Colin was a top competitive tennis player before the war. He volunteered for the air force in 1941 and subsequently joined the RAF in England in 1942. He became pilot of Halifax bombers and flew over 30 operations before being shot down and killed over Holland in the course of a raid on Dusseldorf. He was awarded the DFC posthumously.

 

3. Joan Beatrice PENFOLD 1 [3664], daughter of Frederick Cuthbert PENFOLD [3635] and Lucie Rosina Hartelow BRUNT [3661], was born on 12 September 1920 in Christchurch. NZ. In 1940 she was in Nurse. She married Gustav MEURK [3665] on 26 June 1946 in Christchurch, NZ. She died on 1 January 2003 in Christchurch. NZ.

 

Joan was accepted for nursing training as soon as she reached the minimum age of 19. She had a distinguished career as a nurse over different periods before and after her marriage. This included being in charge of a small country hospital in Pongaroa and a member of the health and counselling service at Canterbury University. She was also active in Womens Bowling becoming President of the local association. When in her sixties she furthered her academic studies at Canterbury Univsrsity and was awarded the Certificate in Liberal Studies.

 

Gustav MEURK 1 [3665] was born in 1917 (approx.). He died on 15 January 1987 in Christchurch. NZ.
