Note from Lloyd Penfold:

He was obviously born out of wedlock and registered in his mother's name as Ernest Charles Wickham (4th q1877 Cuckfield v2b p170)

He must have taken the Penfold surname when his mother Alice Wickham married Charles Penfold in 1879 (only a few weeks before the birth of the second of his generation, George Lewis Penfold.)

1881 census has him as Ernest Charles W Penfold.

I now list him as Ernest Charles Wickham Penfold.

I can only assume that Charles is Ernest's father.
