He must have taken the Penfold surname when his mother Alice Wickham married Charles Penfold in 1879 (only a few weeks before the birth of the second of his generation, George Lewis Penfold.)

1881 census has him as Ernest Charles W Penfold.

I now list him as Ernest Charles Wickham Penfold.

I can only assume that Charles is Ernest's father.
