Note From Sally Edwards 3rd May 2010:
I discovered on the London Metropolitan Archive site the marriage certificate for Ernest Penfold and my grandmother, Grace Lily. Ernest's father is recorded as Walter Penfold (deceased).
And this is the mystery!
In 1881 John Joseph was recorded in 2 homes; that of his parents and also with his wife and family.
Was the marriage failing even then?
John Joseph had 4 other children born from 9-15 years before my grandfather, Ernest. There were no children after Ernest.
1891 census; living at 21 Glading Terrace, Hackney, head of house given as 'Walter' with occupation reading as 'cellarman' and age 23 years. Walter is shown to be living with wife, Mary Jane and sons John Wm, Thomas Hy, and Alfred Geo with correct ages and places of birth to match Mary and my grandfather's siblings.
Ernest was born a month after the 1891 census, in May. His birth certificate has John Joseph as father.
BUT! baptism records from LMA show Ernest was baptised in 1893 with his brother, Thomas Henry and sister, Maud, citing their parents as Walter and Mary Penfold. The address is 21 Glading Terrace, West Hackney; Walter's occupation is a potman.
A marriage certificate dated Aug 1893 with Walter Penfold (25 years) marrying Harriett Kingston (23 years) in the Parish Church of St Mark, Old Street, London. Walter's occupation is leather cutter. His father is William James (deceased), a publican.
Is this the same Walter?
The 1901 census has Walter and Harriett with a daughter, Walter's mother (incorrectly named as Marjorie, her name was Margaret) and Walter's brother, Robert James
By 1901 Mary Penfold, Ernest's mother, is a widow and records show John Joseph died in 1900.
This has kept me awake for many nights!!

1891 census; living at 21 Glading Terrace, Hackney, head of house name given as 'Walter' with occupation reading as 'cellarman' and age as 23 years. Is this correct? Is it really John Joseph who would be 43? 'Walter' is shown to be living with wife, Mary Jane and sons John Wm, Thomas Hy, and Alfred Geo with correct ages and places of birth.
CELLARMAN / CELLARER is a person who looks after the beer, wines and spirits in public houses or the warehouse. Could also be a person who sold or stored wines and spirits. (ww w.btinternet.com/~rayment/general/occupations/27_11_2_2C.html)

22. Dudley Ernest PENFOLD 1 [2269], son of Ernest PENFOLD [2270] and Grace Lily ROWE [2271], was born on 27 February 1917 in Hackney, London. 14 He experienced Wartime occupation between 1941 and 1945 in RNVR. Between 1967 and 1974 he was in Bank Manager, Midland Bank. He died of i) Congestive cardiac failure; ii) rheumatic heart disease on 2 December 1979 in The Cottage Hospital, South Molton, Devon. 15
Dudley's naval career with the RNVR started on July 9, 1940. He would have had a JX six figure number as an Ordinary Seaman Telegraphist and trained for at least six weeks at HMS Ganges and then possibly was sent to a depot such as Chatham or Portsmouth or Devonport awaiting a draft to a ship. I don't remember the details now. The only name I remember is HMS Anthony. He had a very dear friend, Jonah, and they spent two years commanding LCT 649. • LCT-649 earned one battle star for World War II service •Invasion of Normandy, 6 to 24 June 1944 as part of Task Group 124.5
where it was part of the Omaha landings in Normandy. 649 was a ship commissioned in mid-1943 at a builder's yard at Bowling in Scotland.
Following trials it sailed to Troon on the Clyde to be the first such craft to form the 40th Flotilla LCT. It was joined by 11 more which eventually sailed to Lamlash Brodick Bay on the Isle of Arran. This was when Jonah was appointed First Lieutenant. He arrived on board on the 27th October. Jonah and Dudley stayed with LCT649 through thick and thin until October 1945 when they paid off to the French at Rouen. They were shipped back to the UK in a US Transport. I believe Dudley was the First Lieutenant of LCT719 before getting his own command. Towards the end of the war Dudley was despatched to HMS Westcliff and from there he returned to civvy street.
(These details were written in 2007 by his friend, Charles Jones (Jonah) who was a naval officer with him in WW2)
Dudley’s naval career in the RNVR began on July 9th, 1940 as an Ord. Tel (Ordinary Seaman Telegraphist) at HMS Ganges. This was a shore training establishment for boy entrants into the Royal Navy. He was promoted to Acting Sub-Lieutenant RNVR in 1942, to Sub-Lieutenant in 1943 and Lieutenant in 1945. He served on LCT649 and was the Commanding Officer during the Normandy Landings of June 6th – June 24th , 1944 as part of Task Group 124.5.
As a new officer recruit, his first report in 1943 states: “Was a Bank Clerk in civilian life. Rather an ineffectual young officer who will need watching. He has an average brain”.
In 1945 his report says: “A reliable and efficient Officer who handles his ship well and runs an efficient and happy crew. He has charm of manner and a high moral standard. He is fit in all respects for promotion.” (RN Officer File, RN Fleet Headquarters, Disclosure Cell, Portsmouth, 2008).
Dudley Penfold and Yvonne Hall were married 23 May 1942 at Holy Trinity Church, Wandsworth, London. They divorced c1954.
